Rakim y Ken-Y, the popular reggaeton duo from Puerto Rico, is one of the few bands or duos to have made it to popular stardom in Latin America. But this duo did more than just sell a few albums. Rakim y Ken-Y has surpassed the expectations of many, going on to sell millions of albums in not just Latin America, but throughout the world – Now they are worldwide celebrities.
The pair of Rakim and Ken-Y started out like most other aspiring celebrities do – singing in small towns to local crowds wherever they could have gotten a gig. The pair struck gold however when lady luck smiled on them. They entered and won El Draft, the first ever reggaeton draft where the audience got the opportunity to choose the winner.
El Draft was produced by then artist and producer Chencho, in collaboration with Adam Kidron with the sole purpose of providing international exposure to young reggaeton artists who could prove their potential. Rakim y Ken-Y did, and they went on the make magic not only within their own hometown, but across the world.
Rakim Y Ken-Y Nuestra obra maestra
In February of 2006, Rakim y Ken-Y released their first ever album entitled Masterpiece: Nuestra obra maestra (our masterpiece). This debut album was indeed their masterpiece as it went on to feature the hit single ‘Down’. In fact, ‘Down’ was such a huge hit that it became the first of many Rakim y Ken-Y ringtones that would ever be released. 2006 continued to be a good year for the duo as they prepared for their first tour and the release of their second album.
Masterpiece World Tour 2006
In December 2006, Rakim y Ken-Y released a world tour album based on the first, and this they called Masterpiece World Tour 2006. This album featured a number of remixes of the former hits, including a re-mix of ‘Down’ with super reggaeton star Hector ‘El Father’. Again the world continued to love Rakim y Ken-Y and this was reflected in the fact that this second album debuted at the number seven position on the billboard charts.
The success after Nuestra obra maestra
The romantic reggaeton trademark Rakim y Ken-Y lyrics continued to work magic for the pair as even in 2007 this superstar pair continued to rock the charts harder than ever. With another remake of the first hit album, Commemorative Edition 2007, Rakim Y Ken-Y continued to score big on the billboard charts with both singles and album sales.
2007 Billboard Latin Music Awards – A huge success
At the 2007 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Rakim y Ken-Y went up against some of the biggest names in the industry, including Shakira. But with seven nominations, Rakim y Ken-Y were definitely the biggest winners of the night. In the end they took home such awards as Latin Song of the Year and Reggaeton Song and Album of the Year.
Who are the Rakim Y Ken-Y?
Rakim, also known as R.K.M., is José Nieves born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. Ken-Y is short for Kenny Vásquez, also born and raised in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.
